Bioinspired composites from freeze casting with clathrate hydrates

چکیده
Freeze casting with isopropanol (IPA)–H2O as a freezing agent has shown the potential to create porous scaffolds with enlarged pores. Though not experimentally proven, this effect has been suggested to be the result of non-stoichiometric structures called clathrate hydrates forming during the freezing process. In this manuscript, we build upon these results to provide experimental evidence of the formation of clathrate hydrates during the freeze casting process when using IPA–H2O as a freezing agent and explain the observed maximum in pore area through observations of the enthalpy of the transitions. Additionally, these enlarged pores are harnessed in order to create two-phase bioinspired composites. These composites exhibit an increase in mechanical strength over both constituents, a phenomena that is common to complex biological composites. Previous reports have shown that the characteristic method of failure for many freeze cast scaffolds is buckling of the lamellar walls within the porous microstructure. It is proposed that this increase in mechanical strength is due to the support of the second phase, which resists this characteristic buckling failure mode. 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A Fugacity Approach for Prediction of Phase Equilibria of Methane Clathrate Hydrate in Structure H
In this communication, a thermodynamic model is presented to predict the dissociation conditions of structure H (sH) clathrate hydrates with methane as help gas. This approach is an extension of the Klauda and Sandler fugacity model (2000) for prediction of phase boundaries of sI and sII clathrate hydrates. The phase behavior of the water and hydrocarbon system is modeled using the Peng-Robinso...
متن کاملMolecular Hydrogen Storage in Novel Binary Clathrate Hydrates at Near-Ambient Temperatures and Pressures, excerpt from DOE Hydrogen Program 2006 Progress Report
Program Scope Clathrate hydrates are inclusion compounds in which guest molecules occupy the cages formed by a hydrogen-bonded water network [1]. Solid gas clathrate hydrates generally form at high pressures and temperatures near or even above the ice point. Pure hydrogen hydrates have been reported to form cubic structure II hydrates under extreme conditions (200 MPa at 280 K) [2]. We have rec...
متن کاملHigh-pressure gas hydrates.
It has long been known that crystalline hydrates are formed by many simple gases that do not interact strongly with water, and in most cases the gas molecules or atoms occupy 'cages' formed by a framework of water molecules. The majority of these gas hydrates adopt one of two cubic cage structures and are called clathrate hydrates. Notable exceptions are hydrogen and helium which form 'exotic' ...
متن کاملVariability of the methane trapping in martian subsurface clathrate hydrates
Recent observations have evidenced traces of methane (CH4) heterogeneously distributed in the martian atmosphere. However, because the lifetime of CH4 in the atmosphere of Mars is estimated to be around 300–600 years on the basis of photochemistry, its release from a subsurface reservoir or an active primary source of methane have been invoked in the recent literature. Among the existing scenar...
متن کاملP 01 High - pressure gas hydrates
Many simple gases that do not interact strongly with water form crystalline hydrates in which the gas molecules or atoms occupy ‘cages’ formed by a framework of water molecules. These clathrate hydrates are stabilised by hydrophobic gas-water interactions and are model systems for the study of these interactions. Many gas hydrates also occur in nature and their properties provide a basis for mo...
